I’ve been wanting a strap to accessorize my camera for a couple of years now. We’re talking before I even had a camera. A post by Susie Bubble only propelled this obsession. Her chic chain strap totally separates her camera from the crowd.
The only thing I didn’t love about the strap was the price. I am becoming…dare I say it…cheap. If it’s not a shoe or a handbag I find myself saying, “That costs too much, I can make that myself.” Cheap, crafty, resourceful, which ever label you prefer, I am glad that I avoided the impulse to buy a $100 camera strap and opted to create my own for $4.
I just so happened to have a clutch with a detachable chain strap that I wanted to use. But chain material can be found in any store that sells jewelry making supplies. You will also need a yard of nylon tape which you can find in an assortment of colors.
I created a loop in the nylon tape by folding back one edge and sewing a couple of seams to secure it.
I gave my black strap adjusters a quick coat of gold nail polish.
And now I’m in love.

*gasps* Love! I’ve hated the straps on my camera since we first got it, but hadn’t really thought of an alternative. I love the idea of the chains…technically it’s the hubby’s camera but I should do my own to use when I’m the one lugging it around, which is usually the case. Maybe I can convince a friend (*wink*) to do it for me.
Yeah the kit strap is so blah. I’ll see what I can do to help you out. It was really a 10 minute project. I’m surprised it turned out so well.
The engineer in me is dying to know how you went about ensuring that the straps were secure enough to hold the weight of your camera. Don’t laugh. Geeks R’ Us.
I tried to find some tape with thickness similar to that of the strap included in the kit. Then I utilized the very scientific method of “guess and check”. lol. I hung the camera upside down a few times to test.
Nice work! My coworker says she wants to make one in pink!
send me a link when it’s done!
Love this. Such a great DYI way to personalize your camera!
Thanks so much!
Great DIY! When I finally buy a dslr, this is something I will definitely do. First time here and I’m finding a lot of interesting stuff. Are you based out of NYC or Philly, Gigi? I see it says both. I’d live to invite you to a bloggers group that my friend started in NYC.

Thanks Jenny!
Ha! This has definitely made me feel bad about my standard issue Nikon camera strap. Have to upgrade to something more chic immediately!
LOL. I’m working on a few more renditions of the strap.
This is pretty freaking awesome! I can’t believe they cost so much-just for a little strip of fabric that they probably purchased for all of $5 wholesale!
And you look great by the way!

Yes, you are absolutely right. The raw materials can not be that expensive. But I almost fell for it…
GREAT idea
Thank you!
Thats awesome, I love it! Your camera looks so much better now.
Yes, it looks like a “girl” camera.
This is such a cute idea! It’s really cool to see all the interesting camera strap DIY’s that are going around at the moment. My main problem is going to be deciding which one to try first! Definitely book-marking this one for later.
this is a pretty damn awesome idea! I forsee a pimpyourcamera.com very soon! AMazing how a camera is now a fashion accessory due to the rise of street style bloggers the world around.
SO creative!!! Now I’m inspired to let go of my CANON labeled strap!
